2) A little bit extra

Do you want a REALLY good way of remembering Freud iceberg theory. And it’s fun too! (It is too good to be true)

Step #1 – Read this short, tiny article here: http://www.contrib.andrew.cmu.edu/~norm/CatInHat.html

Step #2 – Either read Dr. Seuss’s “Cat in the Hat” or watch the cartoon version on youtube (Part #1 , Part #2  . The intro in Part 1 is a little long, but be patient!

Step #3 – FIND THE FREUDIAN SYMBOLS – it’s like psychological “Where’s Waldo?!” (Go down to the VERY end of this post to find my spoilers (AFTER THE CARTOONS)

Cat in the Hat Spoilers – Here is the Freudian stuff I see in Cat in the Hat

Part #1

  1. Phallic tree
  2. Overcast/rainy (bad things are going to happen)
  3. Don’t get me started on Sally and the main character…they did, after all, “have nothing to do”
  4. Toys (bike, racket) are laying abandoned (like their childhood)
  5. They are sitting at home ALL ALONE because their mom is at work (you’ll find this out later) –so it’s the mom’s fault that they are forced to just “sit, sit, sit, sit” (Freud had a thing against women, as you know)
  6. The Cat in the Hat (CitH) is the Id! He comes into the house and offers the kids what they really want – a chance to have “fun that is funny:” He tempts them with his games and tricks. (plus he is carrying an umbrella – another phallic symbol)
  7. The kids don’t know what to do – they are undecided (LIKE THE EGO).  The fish sure has a strong feeling about the CitH (have they met before?).  He says the cat must go (Superego), because “he should no be here when your mother is out”.
  8. CitH juggles two books (Old and New Testament?), and also creates the Oedipal triangle (milk = mother, rake (work) = father, and toy man = son). Wowzas!

Part #2

  1. The fish (superego) wants the CitH (Id)  to go, but he refuses. He even rubs it in by doing what he does best (more tricks).  I think Thing 1 and Thing 2 are just extentions of the Id (as they cause the same kind of trouble).  The fish wants them out and knows they aren’t tame! They do wierd things, like fly kites in the house (who does that…?)
  2. LOOK AT 2:56 – THE PICTURE LOOKS LIKE FREUD – this makes me think that Seuss make these analogies intentionally
  3. Why is the kite taking out the mother’s sexy new dress…and touching her bed – this seems sexual as well (I can’t stop my inner Freud sometimes)
  4. 3:33 – The kid (The Ego) makes the decision that he doesn’t want to be a part of this anymore (he doesn’t like the way that they play) –> It makes it worse that the mom is going to find them out!!! She is on her way home! Mothers represent the moral figure of the home (traditionally, they would be the one educating the children about religion), and the kids and the fish are worried what she would say about all this! The kids finally sides with the Superego, and catches Thing 1 and Thing 2
  5. The cleaning machine looks like a Freudian couch, where one would tell the psychoanalyst his or her problems.  The machine is “cleaning” up the mess in the kid’s house (and symbolically in their heads)
  6. 6:31 – notice that the artist never shows the mom –> even when she is physically there, she is never entirely “there”.
  7. Best last lines ever (in a Freudian way) – “Should we tell her the things that went on there that day?  Should we tell her about it? Now what should we do? What would you do if your mother asked you?” They are going to hide the events that went on that day for the rest of their lives!

Crazy huh?!

New Beginnings

Hello class,

I decided to create this website, so you can have access to electronic copies of all of my stuff.  This might help for a unit test, or if you forgot/lost/’misplaced”/destroyed your homework.

I will post the topics under the date it was covered. If you missed a day, check the website for any missed material.
